Connect for Health is a group developed for people with disabilities to promote healthy living and independence. The program is done by teaching group members about healthy living, local resources, social support and self confidence. Because it’s led by self-advocates, Connect for Health, creates an excitement about living a healthy lifestyle that overflows from the group and its members into the surrounding community. Our local group is led by Kevis Jones. His excitement for the group has led to more than 40 participating members! Each member has created a healthy goal that is important to them that each individual feels they can reach. Kevis meets with each of the members to encourage them, see how they’re doing and provide local resources. The group meets once a month to discuss goals, learn what they can do to live a healthier, more meaningful live and know the resources where they can get the support and help they need.
The group has visited local gyms, nature trails and the home of the local Special Olympics. They have heard from nutritionist, gym owners and fitness instructors who have graciously donated their time to teach them how the body works and what it need to stay healthy.
